I’m thrilled to be Co-directing the L.A.F. Project with Janna Levi. The current focus of this non-profit project is the situation of the Internally Displaced of Georgia. We recently completed our first round of exhibits in partnership with the International Human Rights Conference, Forum 2000 and the Georgian Embassy in October at Napa Gallery and Anglo-American University’s (AAU) [art]SPACE in Prague. A panel discussion on the topic “Did fake photographs alter Georgian war coverage?” and an artist talk with Mariam Amurvelashvili were also held at AAU. In December we will be heading to Tbilisi to exhibit at Gallery 9 and to Zugdidi to give photography workshops to women and children at the IDP camps, in partnership with GAENATI.

history of photography at tiffin university

tiffin university prague opened in 2009 as a new american business university in prague. i had the pleasure of teaching the history of photography there for 4 semesters. most of the students were from post-soviet countries including kazakhstan, azerbaijan and uzbekistan. unfortunately, the crisis has not spared many and tiffin university had to close its doors in april 2011.

teaching the history of photography to business students was not an easy task. they needed it as a liberal arts credit and did not usually understand why. in the end, not only did they learn about photography in the west (which was completely new to them) but to their surprise, they realized how creative they could be.

residency at popop studios, nassau, the bahamas

popop studios is an amazing space run by john cox. an old family home was transformed into a groundbreaking cultural center with studio spaces for local artists, a gallery and a shop. they run a residency program which is an amazing opportunity for any artist wanting to meet new artists, see how a contemporary art space is run, make new artwork and sink in to the bahamian lifestyle for a while.

john invited me to a residency at popop and the timing could not have been more perfect. i had just gone through some intensely personal stuff and needed a place to step back, relax, edit writing and slowly start to prepare for some new work. everyone at popop was so welcoming and fantastic. i hope to return some day soon!

art workshop, ciudad bolivar

the internally displaced in colombia

ciudad bolivar is a city within the city of bogota that has grown after various civil disputes. it rises up the mountain and is inhabited by people who once lived in rural areas, but are now living in extreme poverty. the level of education is low because families cannot afford to send their kids to school. there is so much violence that teachers are afraid to work there.

in 2008, czech painter michal blazek and i stayed with a community of nuns and held a 5 day workshop for children. we painted, played with clay, drew and sang songs. one day i would like to return with more time and funding to teach skills that will be long lasting and give those children the power to change their realities.

popping pixels!

popping pixels or pixel pops! is a traveling curatorial digital project initiated by cathleen tully in new haven, connecticut. each year, the exhibit is curated by a different curator in a different country. if you're interested in bringing it to your country, you should check out their website.

back in early 2006, while surfing the web, i found a posting in search of a curator. on a whim, i decided to try curating an international exhibition. using my flat as my office, i dove into the endeavor. hundreds of submissions started arriving and before i knew it, there was an exhibition of 27 digital artists at C2C gallery in prague.
