My mission as a visual artist is to visually depict the process of healing and to cleanse myself of an ill society’s teachings and tolerances and in turn motivate others to look inward and also initiate a healing process within themselves. The main themes that are recurrent throughout my work are memory loss and recovery, internalization, the validity of the dream world, self-analysis, spiritual journey, depression, healing, psychology and social criticism. I was born in Santo Domingo to a Dominican father and a Colombian mother and raised in Miami, FL. Often feeling isolated and out of place, but determined to find a sense of self among three cultures, I relied on intuition as a means of reading people and situations and the use of intelligence as a measure of “right and wrong”, instead of simply accepting limited cultural viewpoints.

The freedom to work between various mediums is a necessity. Narrative is extremely important in my work and using different mediums, adds depth and somehow represents the psychological/spiritual complexity of my experience. My aesthetic is raw and more closely connected to emotion, rather than the focus on perfection. Feeling and mood are intended to be dominating aspects. Focus on healing automatically assures the work is personal and honest. The “beauty” of pain is intended to shine through. I believe in process and in the importance of allowing it to unfold. Most importantly, I believe in the focus on light. This can be seen in my photographs that although dark, always have light, shadow or reflection. It can also be found in my writing. Although often harsh, bitter or depressing, its voice is the voice of an inner child trying to liberate itself, one of the many lost voices within our society.  And its focus is liberation, freedom and expression.

I am adamant about pushing internal boundaries and discovering new versions of myself. Artistic expression helps bring my ideas and emotions to a tangible environment and keeps me from remaining dangerously stagnant. I hope to continue working in mediums that best fit my inspiration.
